What Will My Classroom Look Like?

Image
https://www.positiveaction.net/positive-school-climate-culture                Ideally, I will be teaching in the I/S division, specificially high school. My teachables are Biology and Chemistry, so I will most likely be teaching Grade 9/10 Science as well as Grade 11/12 Biology and  Chemistry, at least at first. One of the biggest things that I value is rapport with students. I try very hard to quickly learn names so that I am more connected with my students. I try to engage in conversation with them as much as I can (obviously without impeding learning). I make it a habit to ask my students about their day, how their weekends were, etc. Things like that show that I care about them as  people, and not just as students. I believe that the best teacher is one that you can feel connected to,  I love talking about video games, basketball, and other interests of mine with students, when they get to see that side of me I feel ...

Family Engagement and Communication Plan

I am a strong believer that the first time parents hear from you, it should not be negative. One thing that  my Associate Teacher did was during the first week of school, he called every single one of his students'  parents/guardians and introduced himself. Of course, not everyone picked up the phone, but he also sent a  mass email introducing himself as well. This way, the next time he may call a parent with some bad news,  it isn't the first time you are hearing from him. At the end of the day, as teachers we all want our students  to succeed, and calls home are meant to inform the parent/guardian about the behaviour, but I believe it is also an opportunity to ask them for some tips that may help mitigate the behaviour in general. It is very  important to let the parent/guardian know that you want to help their child, not reprimand them.   https://www.shutterstock.com/search/boy-calling-cart...

My Role as an Educator

Image
As a teacher, I believe my primary role is to educate students about the course content, but most importantly it is to inspire them, and lead them on the right path. As educators, it is not enough to simply pass on information about a specific subject matter. We must do everything we can in order to help these future adults thrive in the real world, outside of school. I will urge my students to ask me anything, whether it is a question about biology, advice on something that is going on in their lives, or their future in general. The best teachers in my opinion, are those that you feel connected with, not just through science, maths, or any other subject. The best teachers are those that you can see as another human being, not just as an educator who is “above you”. I still request respect from my students, but I shall give them that same respect in return.   (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/william_arthur_ward_103...

Managing the Classroom

Image
I believe that students should definitely have a say in the rules of the classroom, which is why I will spend a bit of time at the beginning of the year to make rules with the class together. We can also come up with consequences together, so if any students break any of the rules, they will not be surprised with the consequences that follow. If I see or hear any disruptive behaviour, I will slowly walk toward the student while making eye contact with them, which is sure to make them reflect on their actions. I do not believe in berating students, all it does is it tells the students ways to get under your skin. Classroom management is different for everyone, and I believe that every teacher should have the ability to manage their classroom the way they see fit, that is what makes us all unique at the end of the day (among other things). https://frompond.blogspot.com/2017/08/keep-classroom-rules-simple.html     ...
